Who

Once-foxy actor Kyle MacLachlan is best known for playing the perfect WASP husband on shows like Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives. Off screen, he's married to publicist Desiree Gruber.

Backstory

MacLachlan grew up in Washington state and was raised primarily by his stockbroker dad after his mother died of ovarian cancer. Two years after graduating the University of Washington, the comely young MacLachlan earned his film debut when David Lynch cast him in 1982's Dune. He subsequently became one of the director's favorite talents and appeared in a series of other Lynch projects, starring as an all-American boy who discovers a severed ear in bizarre film noir Blue Velvet in 1986 and as Agent Dale Cooper on the inscrutable TV series Twin Peaks in the early '90s.

Despite appearing in 1995's Showgirls, a move that almost spelled career death, he bounced back in 2000 when he was tapped by Michael Patrick King to play the role of Trey McDougal, Kristin Davis' impotent husband on Sex and the City. Since the end of SatC, he's joined the cast of a similarly female-centric show, Desperate Housewives. Though he's a relatively recent addition to the cast, MacLachlan's character, Orson Hodge, has already been framed for murder, thrown off a building, gotten married, run over someone, and been drugged and raped.

On the side

The oenophile MacLachlan is a partner in the Washington-based Seven Hills Winery.

Personal

MacLachlan dated Lara Flynn Boyle and Laura Dern (whom he starred opposite in Blue Velvet), and was engaged to icy supermodel Linda Evangelista for three years. He married uber-publicist/TV producer Desiree Gruber in 2002. They had their first child, a son named Callum, in 2008. The family lives in the Chelsea Mercantile building, where Penelope Cruz, Christopher Wheeldon, Bobby Flay, Stephanie March, and Sheila Nevins are neighbors.

No joke

MacLachlan's two dogs, Mookie and Sam, have their own website—a bizarre confection of news, jokes, and dog food recommendations, ostensibly written by the pets. The pooches also have their own email addresses and a regular show on YouTube.
